Daoudiate Cultural Centre – Dar Attakafa Marrakech

A major public cultural venue in northern Marrakech

Daoudiate Cultural Centre, widely known as Dar Attakafa, is one of Marrakech’s main public cultural facilities. Located in the Daoudiate district, north of the medina and close to schools, universities and residential areas, it offers a different perspective on the city’s cultural life. Rather than operating primarily within the tourist circuit, the centre serves neighbourhood audiences, students, families, associations, emerging artists and visitors looking for locally rooted cultural programming.

The venue is part of Morocco’s public cultural network and operates under the regional cultural administration for Marrakech-Safi. Different sources and programmes refer to it as Centre Culturel Daoudiate, Théâtre Dar Attakafa Marrakech, the Daoudiate House of Culture, or المركز الثقافي الداوديات. These names describe the same cultural hub, although the theatre, gallery, media-library functions and nearby conservatory may follow distinct administrative or programming arrangements.

Theatre, performance and national festivals

Theatre has long been central to Dar Attakafa. The venue has hosted plays, training workshops, rehearsals, artistic residencies and collaborations involving Moroccan and international cultural organisations. Young performers from Marrakech, university theatre clubs and students from Morocco’s Higher Institute of Dramatic Art and Cultural Animation have taken part in creative workshops at the centre.

This theatrical role remains active. In both 2025 and 2026, Daoudiate Cultural Centre hosted the competition performances of Morocco’s National Amateur Theatre Festival, organised by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication. Participating companies compete for awards covering writing, directing, scenography, acting and best production. The festival confirms the venue’s importance within Morocco’s theatre network and its contribution to amateur practice, training and audience development.

A 130-seat cinema inside the cultural centre

In March 2024, the centre added a 130-seat cinema as part of Morocco’s national programme to reopen and equip screening rooms in public cultural centres. The space was fitted with the technical and logistical equipment required for film screenings and for the regional cultural authority’s cinema programme.

The figure of 130 seats refers specifically to the cinema facility and should not automatically be treated as the capacity of the main theatre. Film titles, screening times and access conditions may change according to the organiser. Visitors should check current cultural events in Marrakech before travelling.

Home to the Marrakech House of Poetry

Since September 2017, Dar Attakafa has hosted the Marrakech House of Poetry. It was created through cooperation between Morocco’s Ministry of Culture and the Department of Culture in the Government of Sharjah, becoming Morocco’s second House of Poetry after the institution established in Tetouan.

The House of Poetry organises readings, critical conversations, writing workshops, youth programmes and events celebrating new Moroccan publications. Recent seasons show that it continues to programme activities from the Daoudiate centre, including events within its “Diwan” series. This sustained literary presence gives Dar Attakafa a distinctive identity within Marrakech: it is not only a theatre or screening venue, but also an address for contemporary poetry, publishing and intergenerational dialogue.

Exhibitions and visual arts

The wider Daoudiate cultural hub also includes spaces associated with exhibitions and contemporary art. Administrative documents distinguish between the Dar Attakafa Daoudiate Theatre and the Daoudiate Art Gallery among facilities managed by the Marrakech-Safi regional cultural administration.

Public information about the gallery’s permanent opening schedule remains limited. It is therefore best understood as part of the cultural complex rather than as a museum with guaranteed daily opening hours. Visitors attending an exhibition should confirm the exact space and schedule with the organiser.

Reading, learning and community participation

Daoudiate Cultural Centre also supports reading, education and community activity. Its programme has included poetry competitions, book events, public discussions, workshops and association-led initiatives. Marrakech Book Festival has used Dar Attakafa, while collaborations with Instituto Cervantes have brought flamenco and contemporary performance to the venue.

This diversity allows the centre to connect artistic presentation with learning and civic participation. On different dates, audiences may find a theatre production, a film screening, a poetry evening, an exhibition, a youth workshop or an event devoted to popular and Amazigh cultural expression.

A cultural geography beyond the tourist city

Marrakech is internationally known for major festivals, heritage monuments, private museums and cultural venues concentrated around the medina, Guéliz and the Hivernage district. Dar Attakafa represents another cultural geography: a public institution embedded in a densely populated neighbourhood and capable of hosting both local initiatives and national events.
