A contemporary-art ecosystem outside Marrakech

Present in Morocco since 2009, Montresso* Art Foundation is a hybrid institution devoted to contemporary artistic research, production and public engagement. Located at Jnane Al’ahmar Ouidane, Douar Ouled Zbir, in the countryside outside Marrakech, it supports Moroccan, African and international artists from the early stages of research through production, exhibition, publication and wider circulation.

The project is associated with collector and patron Jean-Louis Haguenauer and grew around a clear principle: artists need time, working conditions and sustained dialogue, not only a venue in which to display finished objects. The rural setting, surrounded by olive trees and gardens, is therefore part of the foundation’s method. Distance from the city creates room for concentration, while architecture, landscape and outdoor artworks turn the site into a continuous environment for experimentation.

Jardin Rouge artist residency

The foundation’s central programme is the Jardin Rouge residency, organised around the idea of territories. It welcomes emerging and established artists and gives them a framework for research, production and exchange. The programme primarily supports drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, textile and ceramics, while hybrid visual-art practices may also be considered.

Residents work with nine equipped studios, a ceramics workshop, iron and wood facilities, shared working areas and technical and curatorial support. Residency formats and durations vary between calls. The team works in Arabic, English and French, allowing artists from Morocco and abroad to take part without French being an entry requirement.

Jardin Rouge is designed as a laboratory rather than simply accommodation. A project may lead to a studio presentation, exhibition, publication or off-site collaboration, depending on its development. Works produced during the residency may be offered for acquisition, and selected pieces can enter the foundation’s collection, preserving a record of the artists and ideas supported over time.

Three exhibition spaces and an open-air art route

Montresso* operates three exhibition spaces: Espace d’art Montresso, Galerie des Résidents and Salle des Casques. The foundation reports presenting around fifteen exhibitions each year, combining solo projects, residency outcomes, group exhibitions and collaborations with institutions in Morocco and abroad.

The experience extends beyond indoor galleries. A sculpture route unfolds through the gardens and creates a dialogue between artworks, buildings and the surrounding landscape. The Agora is a flexible open-air venue for approximately 120 people, used for performances, concerts, discussions and events connected to the exhibition programme.

The foundation also develops projects beyond its own site. These partnerships and travelling initiatives help artists move between residencies, institutions, exhibitions and professional networks, connecting Marrakech with African, Mediterranean and international contemporary-art scenes.

Education and cultural access

Public engagement is developed through Les Amis de Jardin Rouge, a Moroccan non-profit association initiated by the foundation. Its programmes are designed for schools, universities, associations and partner institutions, giving participants access to the full artistic process: research, experimentation, production, exhibition and direct exchange with resident artists.

The association aims to challenge the idea that contemporary art is reserved for an elite, strengthen young people’s critical engagement with images and cultural production, and encourage intercultural awareness. According to the foundation’s published figures, its educational work has included more than thirty activities, over 1,500 young participants, more than 5,000 people reached and seventeen active partnerships.

Publishing, collection and long-term artistic support

Montresso* also works through publishing. Monographs, residency booklets and exhibition publications document artistic research and extend it through writing. This editorial activity preserves the memory of projects while providing artists with critical and professional tools that can circulate beyond the foundation.

The foundation reports having promoted more than 150 artists and organised dozens of project and residency presentations. Its artist network spans different generations, nationalities and media, including Moroccan artists and practitioners from across Africa and the wider international art world. This diversity reinforces Montresso* as a place where artistic development and intercultural dialogue operate together.

A key part of Marrakech’s contemporary-art landscape

Montresso* occupies a distinctive place in Marrakech because much of its work happens before a public exhibition: research time, production facilities, mentoring, technical support and long-term professional relationships. It therefore complements collecting and museum institutions such as MACAAL while offering a different route into contemporary art.

Planning a visit

The foundation is located at Jnane Al’ahmar Ouidane, Douar Ouled Zbir, in the countryside outside Marrakech, on the Route de Fès side of the city. It should not be confused with the former Culturama address on Route de l’Ourika.

Visits are currently organised by appointment from Wednesday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. Requests should be sent to [email protected]. Because the site is outside central Marrakech and access may depend on the exhibition schedule and residency activity, visitors should confirm both the appointment and directions before travelling.
