A public cultural venue in Sala Al Jadida

The Mohamed Hajji Cultural Centre is a public cultural facility in Sala Al Jadida, within the H’ssaine district of the city of Salé. It is also known as the Mohamed Hajji House of Culture, Cultural Complex or performance hall. Its location reflects an important cultural-policy goal: bringing performances, artistic practice and public programmes closer to residents beyond the historic city centre.

A multidisciplinary hall upgraded for cinema and live performance

In June 2022, the centre inaugurated an upgraded multidisciplinary hall designed as a model venue for film screenings, theatre and music. The project formed part of a national initiative to equip youth centres and cultural facilities with cinema and presentation infrastructure.

The venue can also host seminars, conferences, public discussions and community events. This flexibility allows it to connect artistic programming with education, civic participation and local cultural initiatives.

Theatre, music, film and urban arts

The Mohamed Hajji Cultural Centre has hosted national theatre programmes, Moroccan companies, screenings, concerts and international cultural events. It has also supported Salé’s urban-culture scene through the Chabka Festival, associated with hip-hop, rap, fusion music, dance and emerging creative practices.

Rock events, rap competitions, international cultural days and music programmes have also used the venue. This range places the centre between community access, public cultural programming, popular forms and opportunities for younger artists to meet audiences.

Workshops, learning and community participation

The centre’s role extends beyond performance. Theatre, movement, scenography and set-design workshops have been organised there, alongside artist discussions, visual-art exhibitions, poetry evenings, educational ceremonies and public talks.

Named after Moroccan scholar Mohamed Hajji

The venue bears the name of Mohamed Hajji (1923–2003), a Moroccan historian, scholar and editor associated with major work in historical research and the transmission of Morocco’s intellectual heritage.
