Musée archéologique de Tétouan

## Archaeology of northern Morocco The Archaeological Museum of Tetouan opened on 19 July 1940 near the historic medina. Its holdings derive from archaeological research and excavations in northern Morocco, especially work begun in the 1930s. The collections cover prehistoric, ancient and Islamic periods and place Tetouan in a network of regional settlements and archaeological sites. ## Archaeological sites and collections Objects originate from locations including Kaf Taht El Ghar, M'zora, Lixus, Tamuda and Ksar Es Sghir. Stone tools, pottery, amphorae, coins, architectural fragments, figurines and bronze objects provide evidence of settlement, trade, religious practices and funerary customs. Presenting their archaeological origins makes it possible to compare histories across the Mediterranean coast, Atlantic region and inland communities. ## Mosaics in the Andalusian garden The museum garden displays Roman mosaics from second-century Lixus together with amphorae and Islamic funerary stelae. The entrance vestibule houses two important mosaics from Lixus depicting the Three Graces and a procession of the infant Bacchus. Additional exhibition rooms present Tetouan and its region, with a dedicated section on Tamuda. The mosaics provide visual evidence of artistic conventions and stories circulating across the Roman Mediterranean. ## Practical information Address: 2 avenue Ben Hssain, Tetouan. The FNM lists opening from 10 am to 6 pm, closed Tuesday. Check current prices and visitor arrangements.
