A public cultural venue serving Tetouan

Tetouan Cultural Centre, widely known as the Maison de la Culture, is a public venue under Morocco’s Department of Culture. Located on Avenue Moulay El Abbas in the Sidi Driss district, it provides an auditorium, exhibition areas and working spaces for cultural creation, learning and public events.

Its role extends beyond that of a performance hall. Theatre companies, associations, schools and cultural partners use the centre for theatre, music, cinema, literature, visual arts and audience-development projects.

An important venue for Moroccan theatre

Theatre is one of the centre’s most visible activities. In 2025 it hosted part of the official competition of Morocco’s National Theatre Festival, alongside Cinema Teatro Español. Performances, professional meetings and parallel activities connect the venue to the country’s public theatre network.

For the 2025–2026 season, the centre was selected for a theatre residency led by Mouhtaraf Al Feddan. The programme combines production and touring with workshops in acting, playwriting, directing, scenography, lighting, street theatre and puppetry for professionals, amateurs, young people and children.

Cinema and Mediterranean dialogue

The centre also contributes to Tetouan’s film culture. During the 30th Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival in 2025, it hosted talks, seminars and workshops on photography, scenography, film-image analysis and cinematic language.

This educational role complements the city’s screening venues by approaching cinema through knowledge exchange, critical discussion and professional development.

Music, dance and international cooperation

The auditorium regularly hosts concerts and performances developed through international partnerships. Instituto Cervantes has programmed flamenco, contemporary Spanish music and projects connecting artistic practices across the Mediterranean. The venue has also welcomed work combining sound, digital culture, artificial intelligence and computer-assisted music.

These exchanges reflect Tetouan’s cultural identity, shaped by Andalusian, Moroccan, Mediterranean and African connections.

Exhibitions, literature and artistic heritage

The centre includes visual-arts spaces, including the Abdelkrim Allouch and Mohamed Sraghini galleries, which have taken part in events such as Morocco’s Night of Galleries. Painting, photography and contemporary practice are presented within a city known for the Tetouan School of painting and the National Institute of Fine Arts.

Literary meetings, readings, poetry events, book signings and public debates are also part of the venue’s cultural role. They connect contemporary creation with the intellectual and artistic heritage of a city whose medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.
