Cinema Teatro Español, widely known in the city simply as the Español, is much more than a film theatre. Standing on Avenue Mohamed Ben Larbi Torres, close to Tetouan’s medina and historic Ensanche district, it is one of the city’s most recognisable twentieth-century cultural buildings. Its white façade, bilingual sign and large auditorium preserve the memory of a venue where theatre, flamenco, music and cinema have shared the same stage.

The building remains active as a venue for film screenings, festival ceremonies, theatre, concerts, comedy and national tours. Access is usually tied to a specific advertised event rather than a permanent daily programme, so visitors should confirm the schedule before travelling.

From a 1923 theatre to a landmark cinema

The opening of Teatro Español is generally dated to 1923. Heritage accounts frequently associate its original design with Spanish architect Carlos Óvilo Castelo, an important figure in the development of modern Tetouan during the Protectorate period. The building underwent substantial alterations between 1940 and 1942, including work attributed to architect José Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo.

In its early decades, the stage hosted touring Spanish companies and celebrated performers from flamenco and popular song. Artists connected to its history include La Niña de los Peines, Manuel Vallejo, Juanito Valderrama, Manolo Caracol and Lola Flores. The theatre therefore formed part of a wider artistic circuit connecting Andalusia, northern Morocco and Tetouan’s diverse communities.

From the mid-twentieth century onward, the venue increasingly operated as a cinema. After Moroccan independence, its screen presented Spanish, French, Moroccan, Egyptian, Indian and American films, accompanying several generations for whom going to the cinema was a central part of urban social life.

Architecture shaped by Spanish and Moroccan references

Teatro Español belongs to the architectural landscape of Tetouan’s Ensanche. Its design combines rationalist and Art Deco elements with Moorish Revival and Andalusian references. The white façade is articulated by arched openings, perforated decorative panels and the celebrated name written in both Spanish and Arabic.

Inside, the building retains the scale and atmosphere of a theatre adapted for cinema: a large stage and screen, red seating and a substantial auditorium. This dual identity explains its continuing ability to move between films, plays, concerts and official ceremonies without losing its distinctive character.

Closure, public concern and reopening

Like many historic Moroccan cinemas, the Español struggled with falling attendance, digital consumption and the circulation of pirated DVDs. It closed in February 2015, prompting local concern about the possible loss of an important cultural and architectural landmark.

The building later returned to public use. The Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival currently describes it as a venue renovated in 2018 and equipped with 4K DCP projection and digital sound. The festival lists a capacity of 1,100 seats; earlier accounts generally referred to around 1,000 seats, reflecting different periods and auditorium configurations.

A flagship venue for Mediterranean cinema

Teatro Español is one of the emblematic halls of the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival, a major institution in Moroccan film culture. It hosts official screenings, tributes, encounters with filmmakers and opening or closing ceremonies. The festival’s thirtieth edition held its opening ceremony here in 2025.

This role extends the venue beyond commercial exhibition. The auditorium becomes a meeting point for popular cinephilia, new Mediterranean filmmaking, professional exchange and film education. It is also associated with Tetouan’s International Film School Festival, which provides a platform for student work and younger filmmakers.

Theatre, music and touring entertainment

The building’s original theatrical function remains central to its identity. In November 2025, it hosted the opening of Morocco’s 25th National Theatre Festival, organised by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication with the Province of Tetouan.

Its scale also makes it a significant stop for Moroccan touring productions. Concerts, stand-up comedy, plays and family shows regularly use the stage. Culturama’s archive includes appearances by Hassan El Fad, Yassar, Eko, Said & Wadie and Humouraji, while the 2026 programme includes events featuring Hatim Ammor, Yassar and Nacim Haddad.

The Español therefore operates simultaneously as a heritage cinema, theatre, large performance hall and civic gathering place.

A living site of urban memory

Teatro Español embodies several connected histories: Tetouan’s modern urban development, Moroccan-Spanish cultural exchange, flamenco performance, popular film exhibition and the survival of historic cinemas through changing audience habits.

Its significance is not based on age alone. It comes from the continued relationship between architectural heritage and contemporary use. Whenever a festival, screening or performance lights the façade again, the building resumes its original purpose: bringing a large public together for a shared cultural experience.
