Culture in Greece — festivals, museums and contemporary venues

Explore 15 active festivals and 7 cultural institutions across 13 Greek cities, islands, sites and territories, from Athens and Thessaloniki to Epidaurus, Kalamata, Drama, Syros and Halkidiki.

Greek cultural life extends far beyond ancient sites and Athens. It connects historic festivals, independent cinema, contemporary dance, digital art, photography, live music and national institutions across major cities, regional centres and islands. This Culturama selection brings together 15 active festivals and 7 cultural institutions across 13 territories.

Performing arts between Athens and Epidaurus

The Athens Epidaurus Festival remains a major axis, connecting ancient theatre, contemporary creation, dance, music and performance. The Kalamata International Dance Festival extends this movement across the Peloponnese through a dedicated venue, public space and archaeological sites.

Film, documentary and animation

Thessaloniki hosts two complementary events: the International Film Festival in November and the Documentary Festival in March. Drama provides a historic platform for short film, while on Syros, ANIMASYROS combines screenings, image education, virtual reality and an industry market. In Athens, Opening Nights adds independent cinema and international premieres.

Music and large urban events

The capital supports several formats: Athens Jazz at Technopolis, Release Athens on the waterfront, Ejekt at OAKA and SNF Nostos at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. In northern Greece, Sani Festival links music and landscape in Halkidiki, while reworks activates several Thessaloniki venues through electronic culture.

Image, digital art and visual culture

Athens Photo Festival presents photography, archives, installations and publishing at the Benaki Museum. Athens Digital Arts Festival explores animation, extended reality, performance and relationships between technology, environment and society.

Museums and institutions

The listed institutions span archaeological heritage, contemporary art, music and performing arts: the Acropolis Museum, EMST, Onassis Stegi, Megaron, MOMus, Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Each record includes an introduction, visual, official link and connections to other Greek content.
