A municipal cultural venue in central Casablanca

Sidi Belyout Cultural Complex belongs to the City of Casablanca’s network of public cultural facilities. Located at 28 Rue Léon l’Africain, near Avenue des Forces Armées Royales, Casa-Port and the old medina, it occupies a strategic position within the cultural life of the city centre.

The complex was conceived as a multidisciplinary facility. Performance, artistic education, rehearsal, reading, audiovisual resources and exhibitions are brought together in one building, allowing students, amateur groups, professional artists, associations and audiences to use the venue in different ways.

The Bouchaib Bidaoui Theatre

The main performance space is the Bouchaib Bidaoui Theatre, an auditorium of approximately 265 seats. It is named after an important figure in Casablanca’s popular theatre, song and aita traditions.

The theatre hosts plays, concerts, dance performances, comedy, public talks, screenings and community events. Its medium-sized capacity makes it suitable for productions that need a proper stage while retaining a relatively close relationship between performers and audiences.

The venue is also referred to as “Sidi Belyout Theatre” or simply “Complexe Sidi Belyout”, which explains the different names found in cultural programmes and performance archives.

A conservatory and spaces for artistic learning

The complex is not only a presenting venue. Its facilities include:

• a music conservatory;
• a dance and rehearsal room;
• a library;
• a video library;
• an exhibition gallery or visual-arts space.

This combination creates a link between learning and public presentation. Classes, rehearsals, workshops and student recitals can feed into the venue’s public programme, while access to a working theatre helps learners become familiar with the stage.

Municipal conservatories such as Sidi Belyout have played an understated but important role in the careers of Moroccan performers, providing training in instruments, music theory, theatre, collective practice and stage expression.

Theatre, music, dance and visual arts

The programme may include Arabic- and French-language theatre, Moroccan and international music, comedy, dance, exhibitions, educational activities and cultural discussions. The complex can also host recitals, seminars, workshops and events organised by associations or educational institutions.

Its value lies in treating culture as a regular practice rather than only a ticketed performance. Visitors may come to learn, rehearse, read, exhibit work, attend a show or take part in a public conversation.

A venue within Casablanca’s festival network

Sidi Belyout Cultural Complex is regularly used by festivals and city-wide programmes that operate across several venues. In July 2026, it was one of the locations of the Casablanca International University Theatre Festival, FITUC, alongside university and municipal cultural spaces.

This role confirms its importance as a central relay venue. It also hosts independent and specialist performances, including the event archived by Culturama as Mayhem in Casablanca.

Public cultural infrastructure and local access

Large flagship institutions naturally attract attention, but municipal cultural complexes perform a different task. They provide accessible infrastructure, distribute cultural activity across the city and give associations, young artists and educational organisations places to work and meet audiences.

The complex is located at 28 Rue Léon l’Africain in the Sidi Belyout district, within walking distance of Casa-Port, the Central Market and several parts of downtown Casablanca.

Commonly listed opening hours are 9 am to 6 pm, but access to classes, rehearsals and performances depends on the active programme. Visitors should therefore confirm the relevant event or contact the venue before travelling.
