A gallery connected to Essaouira’s artistic emergence

Damgaard Gallery holds an important place in the recent history of visual art in Essaouira. Created by Frédéric Damgaard in the late 1980s, it helped bring attention to local artists whose work had previously remained outside institutional networks.

The gallery is associated with what is sometimes described as the “Essaouira school”: a diverse group of practices shaped by signs, popular narratives, Gnaoua imagery, animals, colour and freely constructed compositions.

Singular art and mediation

Works include painting, sculpture and assemblage. The venue introduces practices often described as naïve, intuitive or outsider art, while allowing each artist’s individual approach to remain visible.

Damgaard Gallery has connected these artists with collectors and international audiences. It remains a useful reference for understanding how Essaouira developed its contemporary artistic identity.

Practical information

The gallery is on Avenue Oqba Ibn Nafiaa near Place El Menzeh. Confirm current opening times and exhibitions directly with the venue.
