A cultural institution in the medina
The French Institute of Essaouira is located at 9 Rue Mohammed Diouri in Derb Laâlouj, within the former French consulate. It combines artistic programming, a public media library, French-language courses, certifications, residencies and cultural cooperation.
Its programme includes cinema, visual arts, music, literature, activities for young audiences and public discussions. In 2026, the venue hosted screenings, photography exhibitions, concerts, workshops and the Arbre à palabres conversations during the Gnaoua Festival.
Media library, learning and residencies
The media library serves adults, teenagers and children and provides access to the Culturethèque digital resources. Language courses and official certifications follow separate registration calendars.
The institute also supports artists and cultural projects through residencies, calls for projects and Franco-Moroccan partnerships. This makes it a continuing cultural resource rather than only a language centre.
Planning a visit
General public opening hours are listed from Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30 am–12.30 pm and 2.30–7 pm. Event, exhibition, workshop and service times may differ, so check the official programme before travelling.
