## History and cultural identity
The **Théâtre Royal of Marrakech** is a major cultural landmark opposite Marrakech railway station, where Avenue Mohammed VI meets Avenue Hassan II. Architect **Charles Boccara** conceived a monumental composition of domes, colonnades, ochre brick and architectural references drawn from classical and Moroccan traditions. The project was initiated in the late 1970s and has become one of the defining built forms of Guéliz, combining the aspirations of a performing-arts institution with a striking urban identity.
## Architecture, facilities and programming
The exterior and an **open-air amphitheatre accommodating around 1,200 people** were inaugurated on **19 September 2001**. The design also included a large indoor opera-oriented hall. **As of October 2026, that indoor auditorium had not been publicly opened**, despite renewed completion works. It is consequently misleading to describe the entire building as a fully operating opera house. Documented uses primarily concern the outdoor stage and spaces activated for particular events.
## Artistic events and audiences
Depending on the season, the venue has been used for concerts, dance, live productions and festival occasions, including events linked to Marrakech's National Festival of Popular Arts. The building is not a museum with regular visiting hours: public entry is linked to individual performances. Culturama archives a past **« Bombacomique »** show at the Royal Theatre in June 2022. For future visits, check the actual performance area, admission rules, ticket availability and weather for open-air events.
