About this event

MACAAL in Marrakech presents “Statues Also Breathe” through 8 January 2027, a collaborative installation dedicated to the Chibok schoolgirls who remain missing. Initiated by artists Prune Nourry and Adé Bantu with Catharsis Arts Foundation, the project brought together Obafemi-Awolowo University and 108 students from across Nigeria.

The installation consists of 108 terracotta portraits inspired by 15th-century Ife heads. Based on photographs entrusted by the girls’ families, the sculptures form an indivisible body of work connecting memory, art history, disappearance and the refusal to forget. A documentary tracing the creation of the project is also screened at the museum.
